Our Story
Some of our customers are amazed to learn that we actually manufacture our garments right here in the UK — and that our entire operation, from design and cutting through to sewing, finishing, order processing and despatch, all happens under one roof in Midsomer Norton, Somerset.
A Family Business, Founded with Passion
Sulis was founded in 1993 by husband and wife Mark and Fiona Faulkner. What began as a small mail order company specialising in silk underwear and nightwear for women was built on a simple but enduring belief: that silk, one of nature's most extraordinary fibres, deserves to be crafted with care and worn with pride.
From the very beginning, Mark and Fiona were hands-on — sourcing the finest silk fabrics, designing the collections, and building relationships with customers who quickly became loyal fans of the Sulis way of doing things.
Made in England — From the Very Start
In 1994, just a year after launching, we took a bold step: we set up our own manufacturing unit and produced our first silk lingerie collection entirely on our own premises. At a time when so much clothing production was moving overseas, we made a deliberate choice to keep everything in England.
That decision has defined us ever since. Nearly every garment we sell is cut, sewn and finished by our skilled team at our studios near Bath. It means we can maintain the exacting standards our customers expect — and it means every piece carries the care and craftsmanship of people who truly love what they make.
Growing, but Never Losing Sight of What Matters
We became Sulis Silks Ltd in 2000, and in 2004 we expanded into silk menswear — bringing the same luxurious comfort and quality to a whole new range of customers. Today, we produce new lingerie and menswear collections each season: Spring/Summer, and Autumn/Winter.
Our customers span the UK and beyond — across Europe, America, and further afield — but the heart of the business remains exactly where it started: a family, a workshop, and a passion for silk.
The business is now run by the Faulkner family — Mark, Fiona and their son Duncan — and that family spirit runs through everything we do, from the way we design our collections to the personal care we put into every order we send out.
The Craft Behind Every Piece
Silk is one of the world's oldest and most remarkable natural fibres — hypoallergenic, temperature-regulating, naturally absorbent, and wonderfully soft against the skin. Working with it demands skill, patience, and respect for the material.
Our team has built up decades of expertise in handling and sewing silk, and it shows in the quality of the finished garments. Every seam, every stitch, every detail is considered. We think that's worth something — and so do our customers, many of whom have been with us for 20 years or more.
